The World Champions of Cosplay

A record 30 cosplay lovers from 15 different countries participated in the Cosplay Championship held on August 2 2009, in the city of Nagoya as part of the World Cosplay Summit 2009. Interest in the Cosplay Summit from abroad contributed to the support from three Japanese ministries in 2008 – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MLIT), and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI).

The Japanese team was voted world champions for the first time, for their samurai warrior costumes from the video game series “Sengoku Basara” and their spectacular sword fight performance. It’s about time too, since Japanese pop culture has inspired the world with Anime and Manga.
