Son Goku
Any manga or anime fans would notice from far, thanks to his spiky hair design. Son Goku is the principal character of the Dragon Ball series. Naive, honest, and innocent, Goku can best be described as a fighter who is a child at heart. He was raised by a martial artist and later goes on several adventures with a young girl named Bulma to find the mystical Dragon Balls, which grants one wish to the person who assembles all of the Dragon Balls.
In Dragon Ball Z, it is revealed that Goku is actually descended from an alien race called Saiyan. His birth name is Kakarrot, and he was Initially sent to Earth to colonize it once he was of age, but when he fell and hit his head, he forgot his purpose and became a kind and friendly boy who enjoyed fighting just for the fun of it. He goes on to battle many challengers that threatens the safety of his friends and planet Earth, eventually settling down to train a young boy who shows promise as an unrivaled warrior.
Interestingly, Toriyama initially did not plan for Goku to be an alien. It was only after Goku became the winner of the World Martial Arts Tournament after defeating Piccolo did Toriyama decided to introduce stronger fighters from other planets. The same goes for his Super Saiyan power, which Toriyama conceptualized as a way for Goku to go past the limits of standard human powers.

Bulma
The first girl that Goku comes across, Bulma is the daughter and heir of the Capsule Corp, a corporation that produces capsules that can contain objects of any sizes. Despite being a temperamental person, she is highly intelligent as she created the Dragon Radar, a special radar that can locate the Dragon Balls.
Although her role takes a backseat in later stories, she is integral to several sagas - she and her father helps to repair the spaceship that sends Goku’s friends and herself to Planet Namek, and she creates a time machine in a parallel future to send back Future Trunks to warn Goku.

Master Roshi
Master Roshi is the typical shonen charader of a wise and strong teacher of martial arts, but at the same time is a perverted old man. However, he is the one who taught both Goku and Krillin martial arts (or rather, build up their strength) and mastered the Kamehameha energy blast. He disguised himself and participated in the World Martial Arts Tournament in the beginning of the series to teach Goku and Krillin that there are always stronger and more experienced opponents than them around the world.
